English Grammar: When NOT to use an article - 9 rules
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 апр 2025
- Articles (”a”, “an”, “the”, or no article) can be very confusing to English learners. The most confusing thing is when NOT to include an article. In this English grammar class, I will show you 9 situations in which an article should be left out. For example, why is (Ø) French food delicious, while THE French love delicious food? Test your understanding with the quiz: www.engvid.com...

MR ADAM YOU ARE THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER KNOWN .I AM 61 AND I HAVE BEEN STUDYING ENGLISH WITH DIFFERENT TEACHERS AND STUDENT' BOOKS,, ALL MY LIFE.
Hi..adam? I am south korean .. ^^ nice meet you..^^
are you in town for business or is this for a vacation?
why we use the article with vacation and not with business ??
thanks
Important note: languages DO get "the" if they have the word "language" after it. For example "Russian" vs "the russian language" or "English" vs "the english language"
I see that there is no capital letter use as well when talking about the kind of language(?).
@@Grace-cx9zu I have no idea. Honestly I think it might still be capitalized
@@Grace-cx9zu languages should be capitalized
Thanks for noting it
If nationality is the same as the language, it does have “the” before nationality (e.g. The Russian speak Russian and The Thai speak Thai.
Compare w/o “the” before nationality; Australians speak English as British as well. ** no article before language
1) Country Names
2) Nationalities
3) Languages
4) Sports
5) Academic Subjects
6) Geographic Features
7) Proper Names
8) Other Modifiers
9) General Reference To Uncountable Abstract Nouns
@Anh Nguyễn Ngọc Duy because you have mentioned in your sentense that the test was yesterday, so it will be either " I can't believe I failed the test"( provided that you have mentioned which test you are talking about in earlier sentence) or "I can't believe I failed yesterday's test."
thanks for the wrap-up
This helps me a lot. Using articles is the most challenging for me.

The Ukraine :)

@@kononchukolha4650 True, there's no such thing as "The Ukraine"

It's actually "you're a great teacher"
Great explanation. Much appreciated.
Adam, thanks a lot! This is a very helpful video. Your explanation complemented the topics from the textbooks.
Sir,your English speaking is so clear to understand. I really appreciate you. God bless you for your efforts.
Finally I have found a good teacher who can finally help me to understand how I can talk and write in English without or with the minimum of mistakes. Ohhh my goodness.... finally. Before this I started to think that I can't find my first IT job not because of not having the needed hard skills but because of my awful English. Thanks, you gave me a hope. Thanks again!
7:17 “… so lake Baikal in Russia or THE Hudson Bay in Canada no article” - lol. These rules are really confusing. By the way this is the best explanation of these rules. Thanks.
The teacher is talking to us can be something that we always respect and love .Thank you 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much for all the knowledge you imparted to me, i got the scores i need. God bless you and your team. To God be the glory
Thank you, your video helped to refresh understanding of some exceptions!
Structured, informative, and simple. Thank you, Adam. Appreciate your work.
Thank you for this video, especially I admire the style of summarising each part, great teaching skills
It's a nice feeling, learning from your favorite teacher ❤️
Hi, I’m a new English language coach on RUclips and I’m trying to improve my channel. Can you tell me why you like English lessons with Adam? I would really appreciate any answers you have.
Very helpful episode that clarifies when and when not to use the articles. But. It’s just as you said. Every rule has exceptions , and many things in English need memorizing and practicing, not only the articles subject.
For me I learned more about the articles during this video.
Thank you so much for your efforts.
Thank you very much, sir; I needed this lecture.
It's one of my serious problem to memorize the articles. Too plenty rules and exceptions.
Anyway, I so appreciate it, Adam for Your job.
God bless U
Adam is the best teacher I ever heard. It´is incredible how I can easily understand every single word he say. Sometimes I think I can speack english well enough, but when I watch a movie or interview I relize I´m wrong. I wonder why so is much differente. :-(
Thank you for always teaching clearly every word written is explained precisely
3:13 - OMG, I remember asking my English teacher why some nationalities have plural (brazilians, canadians) and others don't (japonese, french) and there it is.
BrazilianS speak Portuguese
Japonese people speak Japonese.
Thank you for the lesson! You explained very clearly:)
Sir I bet that you are the best teacher I have ever seen .
Are you amazing or what??? Wow!! I sure love your videos!!! I wish you could give us examples on when to use which or that. You mentioned it but with no examples to understand the rule more clearly. You truly rock!!!
Thank you so much, Adam! I recently discovered your channel and I'm lovin it.
Greetings from Brazil :D
This is a very tricky argument, especially for those who are not mother tongue, since you need to memorize the general rule and the relative exceptions. I think, in this case, practice makes perfect. Thank you very much!
Great video Adam, thank u very much, i usually watch your videos and also Emma's for improving my English or "the English i need to enhance". I feel great because i didn't need to turn on the english subtitles in the close caption button to understand you, but me as a mexican i am completely out of practice in my environment to speak this language with real people
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but we also need to use the article "the", when we're talking about the countries:
Netherlands.
Philippines.
Not in Netherland 🙂
yes, because they are plural! Notice the "s" at the end
@@shabbirhello12345 Netherlands not without “s”
I found the difference between lake/bay and sea/river. Lakes and bays are fully visible and we can recognize them. However, we can see only the part of seas and rivers so I guess we need to use "the" to tell the whole image of them to the listener.
Always Like your videos Adam, as they are not only from a native speaker, but full of energy and rules, bedside these your speech is smooth and clear.
Always appreciate your video lessons.
Thanks for the video!
Actually, rules 8 and 9 look much simpler than the other ones, because the other rules have so much exceptions that it's just easier to remember them case by case than trying to memorize strange exceptions with exceptions for exceptions inside exceptions =)
As good as wine, Adam. Once again, you raise the level.

Thank you a lot!!!. Greetings from Venezuela.
The best teacher ever in the world.... thank you so much!! Actually, I've struggled a lot because I've never heard about when to use "the", even in schools or books in my country.
can you do a video about extensive( intransitive, monotransitive, ditransitive, complextransitive) and intensive verbs ? please !
because I think you may be the best professor explaining them!
Hello, TeacherI read the following text in a school English book but I think the definite article must not be used with the uncountable noun 'creativity': (last sentence)
"Failure is not the end. Rather, it may be the first step to tge world of success. This is proven by the experiences of many geniuses abd inventors. Although failure interefered with their way in the early days of their lives, it didn't discourage them from reaching the top. Effort and creativity make their success stories a mark in the human creativity."
Thanks for your guidance.

14:40 honestly, I couldn't understand why "A mother's love". Could somebody tell me? If you asked me, I'd say "Mother's love" or at least "The mother's love" though still not knowing why. Maybe you have some other similar examples of using "A" in such specific cases with abstract concepts.
Thank you so much
Big thanks from Algeria
Hello Adam, thank you for such a great video. At 07:14, you mentioned that "lakes and bays don't take an article, so lake Baikal in Russia or THE Hudson bay in Canada, no article", why was THE used in this sentence? Could you kindly provide us with an example sentence with no articles? Thank you.
Just an unintentional mistake :v
There should be no "the" before Hudson Bay.
Could you please, Adam or anyone else, help clarify the difference between identifying nouns and making nouns definity? Adam mentioned these two functions are different(12:15) while he also referred to them using"or" (13:08)
It’s a real pleasure and very useful the way you explain. Thanks for your time
Hello Adam, thank you for this beautiful lesson. I did all the questions good without the last. I thought to put "no article" but I changed my mind because I thought that is a specific alcohol "that is not served in a sealed bottle". So for this reason I don't put "no article " because I understand this situation like something specific and not in general. May you help me to understand better?
It seems to me that the most of English speakers use these rules VERY loosely.
I mean, even Adam here said, at 7:15, "so, Lake Baikal in Russia or THE Lake Hudson in Canada - no article", but he just used it.
I wouldn't say that he made a mistake, but I do think that native speakers often drop it or put it where it doesn't technically go in order to make a better flow to the sentence.
Kind of "the flow of the sentence trumps the strict grammar rules". I also see it on forums and boards often. Does that make sense to the native speakers reading this ?
Adam thanks a lot for this thorough lecture on zero article. Just two questions about the use of articles before last names. Referring to a family last name should we say the Clinton, or simply Clinton with zero article?
Also, could you explain when we use zero article, definite and indefinite article before the surname plus title of an individual: Mr. Smith (zero article), the Mr. Smith, a Mr. Smith?
i''d be grateful if you explain when we should use article ""a"' and when "'the'' with the word sky as in the coursebooks and literature we find both varients.
Very thorough, well organized and presented. Nice.
I was waiting for this moment all my life) Thanks a lot)

7:20, anyone? I'm rather surprised no one already pointed this out .. well, at least not in the top comments I'm seeing, lol. however, I did live in Canada and while there, I also always used to say, "the Hudson Bay" .. no one ever corrected me. but that doesn't mean much (English isn't my first language, so what do I know anyways, lol). bygone; my point is, to me it sounds like he's saying, "the Hudson Bay in Canada doesn't take an article." (I rephrased that one, but something along it). or am I just plainly wrong?
Thanks mr.adam...!Being helpful

I have a question about the presence of "the" in a defining noun phrase. I have Googled a lot of websites about grammar, but none can answer my question, when do we need a "the" in a defining noun phrase?
My confusion arises from the exercise in my grammar book, my homework. I see model answers like :
(1) THE famous attraction Sydney Opera House is there.
(2) ___ Famous chef Joe Cheung will open a restaurant.
(3) Lily studies in THE international school East Island School.
(4) He works for ____ mobile service provider Orange Co.
(5) ___ Head prefect Amy received an award from the teacher.
(6) ___ Singer Eason Chan was born in HK.
(7) THE late composer Beethoven wrote this song.
(8) ___ Famous landmark the Eiffel Tower was my first stop.
(9) I saw THE famous London Bridge.
(10) I went to THE suburban town Taipo.
(11) THE pop song Let It Go is my favourite.
(12) A beautiful place Stanley is near us.
(13) A young engineer Sam Wong is a hard-working man.
------------------------------------
Even after a lot of searching and thinking, I don't understand...
why in 2, 4, 5-7, 8, we don't need "the" in those examples ?
Why is "the" needed (in 1, 3, 7, 9, 11-12) ?
Why is "a" needed (in 12-13) ?
definitely keeping this in my library of videos. many thanks!!
Great lesson as always❤❤❤ Thanks😊
