Inspector Chew, portrayed by Leslie Sands, is a character seeking redemption and closure in "Better Never Than Late," a gripping radio play by R.D. Wingfield. Twelve years prior to the play's events, Inspector Chew was an ardent police officer whose life was stained by a tragic personal loss: while embroiled in the investigation of a kidnapped child, his own son passed away, and his wife deserted him. This personal catastrophe shook him profoundly, causing him to withdraw emotionally from his once-beloved profession.
As Chew nears the twilight of his career, the unresolved kidnapping case that coincided with his personal loss remains a haunting shadow. Determined to retire with a clear conscience, Chew embarks on a final mission to solve the case and "wipe the slate clean." The play follows his dogged and introspective journey to bring justice to the kidnapped child's family and to himself.
Produced by Glyn Dearman, the play features a strong ensemble cast, including Brian Haines, Sean Barrett, Fraser Kerr, Malcolm Gerard, Charles Simon, and others who bring depth to the suspenseful narrative. R.D. Wingfield's sharp dialogue and distinct character portrayals ensure that "Better Never Than Late" is a compelling exploration of loss, duty, and redemption.

I loved this. Brilliantly acted, with an interesting dilemma for Chew near the end. Only at the very end did I understand the title.
He is my current addiction!!!!!Boy!He is good!!!!
Intriguing, but one of the rare occasions where I guessed how it would end. (more or less) Very enjoyable. Thank you
A gripping story. Very well done.
Thank you
Great 👌
Thank you
Thank you. ❤
Very enjoyable, thank you very much 👍🥂
Chew sounds like the great actor Leslie Sands who played a Detective on tv in 1964.
Aah Wingfield !
Aah a large glass of Cockburn port and a wing armchair are the best things to listen to this with.
Was it mainly plays Wingfield wrote plus frost? There seems to be a rich vein of brilliant plays that’s a lovely surprise. Especially grateful these days when my mum has dementia bless her and lives with us. In respite at the moment but was too tired to go anywhere went to bed for a week
Sorry to hear about your mother, best wishes 🙏 . There is a lot more Wingfield coming up though, hope you will like them!
Oh that’s great thank you x
No mother would say the loss of a child means nothing to her.
of course not but she was only saying it to get rid of the cop. It’s only a story, get a grip on reality
I commented not because I was cross it sort of took me out of the drama I’m not complaining it was 2 dimensional
good climax
Best of the CBC.
Id definitely have taken the money
The 😔😔😔😕😛🙃😇
I've listened to this play, so many times, I could, probably recite it to, with four friends sitting in my living room.. !! From character to character,
With me adding in my little bit of attitude.
And the others Robert county daddy herb and shuba. ? It would Becomes to be very lively with the rated R version, but with the last one under the church in a tomb. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN
QUITE FRIGGIN. COMICAL. !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!
